The change of season brings the Desert de les Palmes a great range of flowers that colour the landscape.

The first to appear are the yellow flowers of the albaidas (Anthyllis cystisoides), surrounded by different Cistus.

ALBAIDA Y JARA BLANCA
JARA BLANCA

The White Cistus (Cistus albidus), oddly enough with pink flowers, is the most common, but we can also find specimens of Moorish Cistus ( Cistus salviifolius), with white flowers, and Black Cistus, whose white flowers are barely starting to bloom.

JAGUARZO MORISCO
JAGUARZO NEGRO

It is remarkable that the common names for the different species of cistus tend to overlap: for instance, the name White Cistus is used to refer to almost any variety of the genus cistus.

It is also time for the Colutea Arborescens to bloom. In Spanish its common name Scarewolf comes from the fact that, according to popular belief, the summer breezes make the seeds move inside the pods, making it sound like a baby's rattle and thus scaring wolves and foxes away.

ESPANTALOBOS

A great display of smaller flowers grow near the bushes mentioned above:

 ASFÓDELOS (Asphodelus ramosus)

ARVEJAS (Lathyrus clymenum)

MALVA (Lavatera cretica)

JACINTO SILVESTRE (Muscari neglectum)

CORONILLAS (Coronilla coronata)

SILENE CONICA

CALÉNDULA (Calendula arvensis)

GERANIO (Geranium pusillum)

LLETSÓ o LECHUGA DE LIEBRE (Sonchus asper)

Bright-coloured flowers are not essential for being special.

EUFORBIA

CUCHARA DE PASTOR (Leuzea conifera)

LENTISCO (Pistacia lentiscus)

No doubt, parasitic plants look spectacular and somewhat mysterious. They grow firmly attached to their host plants' roots by means of sucking organs. A common example is the orobanche.

the ground-covering Pilgrim's Beard  (Cuscuta epithymum) parasitizes the Anthyllis cistus,

and the amazing blooming of the Cytinus Hypocistis (Maiden's tits). It is edible, sweet-flavoured and, maybe because of this, quite scarce. It only parasitizes the cistus genus.

The outer flowers of each rosette are female and they are the first to open; the male ones in the centre will later.
